West Michigan Gay Men's Chorus: Double your pleasure in song

Saturday, Apr. 30, 4 p.m. gala event/concert 1 & 7:30 concert 2 only
The last year has definitely been an up and down year for the nation’s LGBT community. These highs are illustrated through the many happy faces of couples now heading to the courthouse boasting a blip to the oft touted “marriage is a dead institution” to the lows of North Carolina’s recent gay-panic as legislators removed all LGBT protections for the entire state’s cities simply because they freaked out that a transgender person might use their public restrooms based on their gender identity.

It has been a wild ride, and this year’s spring concert with the West Michigan’s Gay Men’s Chorus will reflect these changes with an exciting new concert.

The Chorus will host two concerts at the intimate Women’s City Club in downtown Grand Rapids with RT Williams conducting and accompanied by the thrilling musicality of Joel Schindlbeck on the keyboard.

The night’s two concerts will feature many audience favorites, including “Color Out of Colorado.” In addition, the chorus will perform a new version of an old American standard  in honor of the Supreme Court marriage equality ruling, “Get Me to the Church on Time.”

And lest you think the night is simply a throwback event, the chorus has even pulled together a Stephen Schwartz medley in honor of he and other Broadway composers who are telling North Carolina that the state can no longer license nor perform their compositions. The medley will include tunes from Wicked, Godspell and many other favorite songs from the Schwartz canon.

In addition, the West Michigan Gay Men's Chorus welcomes a special musical set by the dynamic musical duo, Kelly Carey and Rick Santamaria. Carey will even be joining the chorus on a few numbers.

The first concert is billed as a gala with appetizers and access to a great silent auction with donated items from Herman Miller, Steelcase, Celebration Cinema, Art of the Table, and area restaurants. After the pre-concert gala with a cash bar set up in the dining room, guests will move to the lower auditorium for this special concert.

The second concert includes the performance and a chance to bid on gift cards up for grabs in what WMGMC’s vice present David Abbot calls a “gift card bonanza.”

This night promises to be two very lively shows in a great initiate space. But do not delay getting tickets, as, unlike past events, this venue has limited seating and is limited to 150 tickets per show.

Admission: $50 concert 1 and gala, $20 concert 2 - Ticket can be purchased at The Apartment Lounge or online
