I tend to be old school when it comes to books and enjoy simple their pleasures like the act of turning pages and that unique scent of black ink on paper. It simply cannot be replicated on my iPad…yet.
However, when it comes to traveling, we often have to decide if we want to pay the extra baggage fee for the books we’re hoping to read while away or seek another “lighter” path.
For many on the go, audiobooks are the best way to travel light. In fact, according to the Grand Rapids Public Library, people really L-O-V-E audiobooks, which is why GRPL is hosting Voices Behind the Books, a night devoted to the voices and recording of audiobooks.
Some listeners love audiobooks so much that the GRPL reports they often follow the narrators much like we do the authors of these works. This unique event targets not only our local love of this platform but seeks to deepen that experience by featuring three unique and local narrators: Kate Rudd, Tanya Eby, and Amy McFadden, who have collectively brought to life more than 800 books.
What is beautiful about this experience is that these three authors (as well as others in our region) are afforded this opportunity because one of the leading agencies for audiobooks production, Brilliance Audio, is located in Grand Haven.
“A good narrator brings to life the characters of a book, imbuing them with personality,” says GRPL’s Marketing and Communication Director Kristen Krueger-Corrado. “For many, hearing an audiobook narrator do a live reading and talk about their work is as exciting as hearing an author read and discuss his work.”
Kate Rudd narrated the Odysseu and Audie-award winning The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Tanya Eby is the voice of the Rizzoli and Isles series by Tess Gerritsen. Amy McFadden in known for her comedic timing and was nominated for an Audie for Amy Falls Down. All three are Earphones Award Winners and have been nominated for numerous Audie Awards.
As an added bonus, besides the economic plus of a local firm succeeding in publishing through the hiring of local voice talent, attendees at this special event will have a chance to win free audiobooks from Brilliance Audio.
