Break It Down, Make It Better: Putting It All Together

Saturday, Mar. 1, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
"Bit by bit, putting it together/Piece by piece, only way to make a work of art/Every moment makes a contribution." This line is from the music number, "Putting It Together," and it opens act two of Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George -- a musical inspired by the painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat.

And for those who have ever produced a large-scale work of art or had to curate a venue for an art exhibition, then you know all too well all the pieces that have to come together to make it work. This song, for those who know it, has surely been on their mind somewhere in the process as it truly captures that spirit of creation.

And in an effort to make things run smoother for those in our community comes an opportunity to attend a day-long program aimed at helping make our artists much better at the other parts of their business that are often not shared with them in school or college.

Break it Down, Make It Better is a day-long conference to showcase the theme of The Elements of a Great Art Show and is the first in a series of collaborative discussions hosted at the UICA and supported in partnership with Avenue for the Arts and ArtPrize.

The topics will range from clever sessions for artists with titles like "No One is Coming to Save You" and "Contracts: Better Safe than Sorry." They also will be offering sessions for those looking to curate, with sessions devoted to the process of curation as well as how to navigate the multi-discipline field of art effectively.

Even those folks who will report back after a show, the documenters, are also invited to attend and hear from speakers on the topics of "What Documenters Do?" and "Connecting to Experience."

Future events will be coming soon, but this foundational program is a great place for anyone from the beginner to the novice to consider entry. Heck, even an experienced lad like me will be there, since not only will I be presenting as Rapid Growth's Lifestyle Editor but also as an artist. I get you. And that, my friend, is the state of art today. You have to see the big picture and put it all together.

Admission: $35 per person for nonmembers / Members of UICA, Avenue for the Arts, ArtPrize's ArtClub and ArtPrize Venues, will have their entry fee waived for this event.
