Season Kick-Off Party & Performance: Spotlight Delight Sampler

Saturday, Sept. 28, 6:30 p.m. doors, 7:30 p.m. performance
It is hard to believe how quickly summer went this year, but for our area Grand Rapids Ballet, over the last four months since they last performed, they have hardly been lounging by the lakeshore reading Balanchine & the Lost Muse: Revolution & the Making of a Choreographer by Elizabeth Kendall.

If anything, someone from the Grand Rapids company was probably dancing Balanchine on the water’s edge through the gently blowing beach grasses while bathed in moonlight. Dancers love to dance and in my experience enjoy performing even in the most remote of places.

For one night only the Grand Rapids Ballet presents a very special performance event to kick-off the 2013-14 season that is also part homecoming for the artists who are returning to the area after an impressive four months of being on the road.

The night begins with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres with a little live music, followed by a series of dance showcases in the theatre from the GRB’s visually stunning performances created around the world in Vietnam, Japan, New York, and many other countries this summer. After the stage performances, the dancers will mingle about with the guests and chat about their adventures in dance.

So why host this third annual event during ArtPrize?

“That goes without saying…the entire community is focused on art and its place in our lives,” says GRB’s Executive Director Glenn Del Vecchio. “For our audience, art lovers and dance enthusiasts, this is an exceptional time of year. So we add to the (ArtPrize) experience by offering exceptional quality dance.”

Very soon, according to Del Vecchio, our Grand Rapids Ballet will begin to move beyond being known as a regional company to being one of national and international prominence. The pieces featured in this kick-off program are a fine way to see those works of art that were performed for audiences around the world and are helping change the way people look at our GRB.

In addition to the summer repertoire program, a special performance by the GRB Junior Company will take place this evening.

Admission: $60 ($48 for season subscribers)
