Committed to Paper: Commit to Calendar

We are so used to the chef's choice in a restaurant, but we rarely consider other professions where a leader in their field has a recommendation for your consumption.

In the area of art, tours are commonly offered around a particular exhibition via a docent or arts educator. On a rare occasion we get lucky and the curator of the collection will walk us through the gallery, showcasing a lifetime of study, thus bringing a deeper appreciation for the art.

At the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Chief Curator Joseph Becherer will offer a personal and insightful educational tour of the new exhibition, Committed to Paper: Master Drawings and Prints by Sculptors (Jan. 31 - Apr. 27) on Tuesday night, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

"Art historically, works on paper have made a huge impact from the Renaissance forward. Certainly, many are functional but each is intimate and personal -- especially for a sculptor who often must work collaboratively," says Becher. "The experience for the viewer is likewise intimate and rewarding, because prints and drawings are treasury of ideas and imagery. Treated correctly, they stand the test of time and carry that treasury forward."

The show will have on display too many to list here but includes work from artists Magdalena Abakanowicz, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, Jaume Plensa, and one of my favorite artists with a strong connection to our city's development over the last 40 years, Mark di Suvero.

If you have ever wondered about the role that a drawing can play in informing our views of an artist's work or their contribution to the world of art, this show provides a rare moment where such interaction is possible within a typically intimate gallery setting.
