Mustard Plug Holiday Party: And Exclusive GR Record Release

Sunday, Dec. 29, 5:30 p.m. doors
If you live long enough, then you will not doubt get lucky enough to see your era’s contribution resurrected (and often repurposed) for a new generation.

However, if you continue to evolve in your craft, then you will not only be rewarded in many diverse ways for your contribution but, in addition, they will award you the much revered term: seminal.

On Sunday, Dec. 29 Grand Rapids’ seminal band Mustard Plug, who helped jump-start our music scene and really never stopped performing since their 1990 debut, will be returning to The Intersection Lounge for their 11th annual Holiday Party show. The band, which continues to capture the imaginations of fans here in Grand Rapids and around the world with their checkered Vans and ska beats, will will also be bringing their latest release, “Can’t Contain It,” a full two weeks before it goes on sale to the public.

And lest you think that this new release, the band’s first in nearly seven years, is some attempt to cash in on their 22-year career or fame, then right out of the gate the first track, “We Came To Party” will win fans young and old(er) over with its stripped-down yet perfect beat in a style that harkens back to England and Jamaica. It is the ultimate party music in many ways.

“We recorded the album at Rick Johnson's (our bass player’s house) basement studio and honestly it was the most fun I've ever had in the studio,” says Mustard Plug band member Dave Kirchgessner. “All the usual pressure of trying to get it done on time and knowing that every minute that goes by is costing you a bazillion dollars was gone, so we could take our time, experiment and make a cool album. Plus we're at the point after 22 years, that we know what we're doing.”

If you have never seen the band at this holiday show, then this is a real treat since the two nights leading up to the concert, the band will be in Detroit and then Chicago before their homecoming show and release of the new material. Their shows are all ages welcome and are truly a lot of fun to see live. Joining the band live this night will be The Mixtapes, The Pinstripes, 3 Cents Short, and Dagger Down.

Admission: $10 advance / $12 day of show ($2 off day of show with canned food donation)
