GR Roller Derby: Mitten Kitten Rolls In

Saturday, Nov. 23, 5 p.m. doors, 6 p.m. match
In 2013 our local roller girls league team did something that no one thought was possible and a handful of you noticed: They became, at the end of their last season, ranked as number 40 in the world standings as they headed into the playoffs.

Sitting next to big names like New York, London, and Chicago, our very own Grand Raggidy Roller Girls’ All Stars, as members of the international Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), had finally trained and played hard enough to break into this elite ranking and one of the smallest cities to be admitted to this prestigious club. They had achieved what could only be described as a dream for our team until this new day arrived.

This Saturday, a double header made up of players from all over the Midwest will gather in Grandville to play in the Mitten Kitten – a match that is sure to not only raise temps on the court but in the stands. This match heats up with a few interesting additions -- none bigger than a special homecoming for one player.

Our very own Jackie Daniels, who departed because of a career change that took her to Chicago, will be back to skate against the very team she helped found in Grand Rapids. Daniels is a member of the Chicago Windy City Rollers – a team ranked in the top ten of the world.

“I am so excited to be playing back in Grand Rapids for this homecoming match,” says Daniels. “I hate the thought of playing against Grand Raggidy, but it’s better than not playing at all! Also, I’m bringing my old Grand Raggidy’s jersey, just in case I have to switch teams for one night.”

There have been a lot of startup sports teams that have come and gone in our area (semi-pro women’s volleyball, anyone?), but for your money you cannot find a more solid and tough team of indie players than our very own Grand Raggidy Girls.

And of course, immediately after the match, the girls head to The Rez on Plainfield for the best after party in the city. And while pants off dance off is less and less these days, you an always hope for a revival at any moment and typically after 1 a.m. (wink.)

Admission: In advance tickets are $12 /  $15 at the door.
