Bowie's birthday: Put on your red shoes and dance the blues

Thursday, Jan. 7, 9 p.m.
David Bowie is turning 69 on Friday, and the night before fans of the AARP-certified rocker are invited to attend Vinyl Thursdays at Harmony Brewing, which will be throwing a party for the man The New York Times once called in 2002 a 21st-century entrepreneur because of the scope of projects the artist has surrounded himself with as he ages.

Proving he shows no sign of slowing down as an artist, the artist recently penned a few songs for the new off-broadway show Lazarus, a follow-up to “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” It debuted in New York on Dec. 7 and was, at the end of the year, the hottest selling ticket in the Big Apple.

In November of 2015 Bowie debuted “Blackstar,” a new 10-minute video and the title of his 28th studio album that will be released on Jan. 8 — the singer’s 69th birthday. This new release is rumored to be exploring other musical themes often associated with jazz.

This special night of Bowie music will be formatted on the previous vinyl night special editions devoted to a single artist’s work. The Madonna event last year was one of my favorite nights out in the city during 2015, as people sang along, and some even acted out, to the musician who pretty much owned the music video genre of the 1980/90s.

The Bowie night’s soundscape will be curated by DJ Lukey Luke (aka Mr. Slow Charm) with DJ Gravy on standby should the Charm need a smoke break. Look for rare vinyl of popular songs, as well as classic cuts from any one of the many epic albums Bowie has released.

If you have a request for a song to be played on this night, it is always best on these special themed nights to get them in early. To make a request in advance with the djs, please visit their Facebook event page and post it there.
