Underground Concert Series: Wildly successful neighborhood jazz program returns

Sunday, Sept. 20, 3 p.m.
After a wildly successful debut year, The Underground Concert Series will begin its second season at East Hills' LaFontsee Gallery on Sunday, September 20 at 3 p.m.

Taking a cue from last year's collaborations, LaFontsee Gallery continues its partnership with Blue Lake Public Radio's Lazaro Vega and Adventure Music.

Continuing their commitment to present the leading edge in contemporary jazz, the gallery setting will welcome The Chicago Project's cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and drummer/percussionist Michael Zerang. Joining the ensemble will be saxophonist/bass clarinetist Gebhard Ullmann and trombonist Steve Swell.

This ensemble is an excellent example of the improvisational jazz style and just one of six stops the musicians have booked for their latest tour.

“Gebhard Ullmann is one of the finest improvising artists in the world today,” says pianist Paul Bley of the Berlin-based tenor saxophonist/bass clarinetist with 50 recordings released under his own name. Steve Swell has a foundation in the teachings of veteran trombonist Roswell Rudd and blossomed from there into a socially conscious, virtuosic trombonist and visionary bandleader (hear his ensemble “Slamming the Infinite”).

So if you are looking for something light and fun to do this Sunday, then consider attending this intimate concert in an inspiring gallery filled with a collection of local and international artists.

The September 20 concert is made possible in part through the support of The Goethe Institute.

Admission: $20 in advance, $10 for students with a student I.D. and $25 at the door. Kids ages 12 and under are free. Advance tickets available only from www.adventuremusic.org
