Meijer LPGA Classic: Something Fore Everyone

Opening: Tuesday, July 21 - 26 (LPGA Classic Thurs - Sunday)
I will be the first to admit that I tried golf and that it didn't take. I guess it is not in my genes, as I've always agreed with the old quote, "Golf is a good walk spoiled."

But as I dive into what the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft has in store for its second year golf event, I am truly excited to get on the green. If you are unfamiliar with Big Sports and all they have to offer a community, then you're in for a real experience this week as the LPGA Classic offers a flurry of activities for everyone. (Hint: Google Super Bowl Parties and you'll have an idea of the expanded reach Big Sports has within the host city beyond the stadium.)

The other offerings happening this weekend include a 5k Run+Walk at Rockford High School; a community concert at the Van Andel featuring OneRepublic with TV's The Voice winner Josh Kaufman; and a Celebrity Chef Cookoff with New York's (and Northport, MI's summer resident) Mario Batali and returning culinary expert Gail Simmons at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. There is even a competition happening at the cookoff between local pastry chefs from The Cakabakery, Field & Fire, and Sweetie-Licious.

But the real fun is to join the more than 40,000 people expected to come out to Blythefield Country Club to witness the 140 top female golfers in the world competing over the four-day competition vying for the $2 million purse including Lexi Thompson, Brittany Lincicome, Ai Miyazato, and Cristie Kerr.

Best bet if you want to see the final moments is to arrive Sunday afternoon and  make your way to the 18th hole before the approx. 3 p.m. winning ceremony.

Admission: Varies by event.  Proceeds from the event will benefit the Simply Give program. Please search #forehunger for more details.
