Garfield Party in the Park: Local Locals Debut

Saturday, August 15, 5:00 - 10:30 p.m.
This weekend, another neighborhood-created festival debuts – this one in one of the city's most beautiful urban parkways: Garfield Park. The "Party in the Park" is a first of its kind event for this SE neighborhood.

For starters, this community gathering offers local residents an opportunity to assemble in a park setting as neighbors and celebrate the end of summer. But it's also a chance for those in our city who might not be as familiar with the area to come out, meet the neighbors, and explore one of the best parks in the city.

And lest you think this is a thinly veiled attempt to get you to relocate here, it is a party above all and a night of fun, free, family-friendly entertainment has been planned.

If you do not want to pack a supper to enjoy in the park, then there are food vendors including B&Y "Real Good Barbecue" with rib tips, pulled pork and Little Caesars. The Garfield Park Neighborhood Association will be providing free popcorn for the kids during the movie.

Live performances and interactive workshops, provided by Grandville Avenue Arts & Humanities, will begin at 5 p.m. with drum performances, hip hop dancers, and the Aeriel Tactic Breakdance Crew. At dusk will be a free showing of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day at the pop-up cinema in the heart of the park.

They will not be serving alcohol at the event this year, but the Garfield Park Neighborhoods Association will be selling bottles of water to raise money for future events.

For GRPS parents, Goodwill will be attending the event to offer low-cost school uniforms, as well as backpacks and other supplies.

"This is a chance to enjoy a spacious park that's perfect for throwing a Frisbee with the kids, delicious grilled food, an eclectic mix of live entertainment and performances, and a chance to enjoy a free movie with friends and family," says Garfield Park neighbor and Party in the Park co-founder Daniel VanderMolen.
