Race Together: Culture, Cocktails and Comedy

Stop me if you heard this one: two black comics walk into CityFlats Ballroom with a DJ….Ok, so it is no joke but the real deal as Partners for a Racism-Free Community hold their annual fundraiser event and do it with a twist: a comedy show.

In the most unlikely of moves by a local nonprofit organization tackling the serious topics of race and bias comes one of the boldest events of the year, Race Together: Culture, Cocktails and Comedy at CityFlats Hotel.

The topic of institutional racism is probably the last topic that any comic wants to tackle unless, of course, you are comedians Deborah Delk (Atlanta) or T-Murphy (Chicago), whose careers of shedding light on the topic of difference and the humor buried within makes these two a perfect choice for this event.

Delk is described as a comic with old school flavor but a new school twist and enjoys telling stories rooted in contemporary society. She holds a degree in Nursing from Emory University, “and in the other hand a BIG FAT NEEDLE!” and enjoys telling stories that are most certainly going to buck people’s perceptions of race and affinity politics.

T-Murphy will also be performing a clean comedy set focused on the observations only a man from our neighboring city could deliver with smile and rapid fire charm. Also performing will be DJ Composition.

Partners for a Racism-Free Community was created out of a decade of Summits on Racism in the Grand Rapids community, which were sponsored by the Grand Rapids Area Center for Ecumenism (GRACE), and has since grown to create an assessment and credentialing process in which area organizations and businesses can explore six critical target areas to address bias often trapped within their workplaces.

These standards, created by a team of volunteers representing a cross-section of the Grand Rapids community, seek to bring into balance a more racially, socio-economically, and organizationally diverse option for our area’s firms. Supporting this event helps them continue the amazing work they are performing in our community ...and you get to have a good laugh in the process.

Admission: $40.
