Valentiger: Chasing stray animals

Riding the crest of the wave of acts from Michigan doing their best to stay on tour (and thus on the minds of their growing fan base) is the act Valentiger.

This Grand Rapids-based three-piece band, Valentiger is Brent Shirey (vocals, guitar), Scott Rider (drummer) and Bill Kahler (bassist), who will be dropping in at Founders Brewing Company’s Taproom at the midway point of their latest 10-city tour of the Midwest and upper East Coast.

Valentiger has often been referred to by many writers as the slow burn artist of Grand Rapids, in that they are solid in each of their releases over the years and how they tour smartly as they build up an audience.

In fact, the 2011 release “Oh, To Know!” took them all the way to Austin, TX, where they performed for attendees at the popular SXSW festival.

“Stray Animals”  - the band’s latest - took more than a year to record but is the kind of solid songwriting style that we have come to expect and love from this local act, as they create perfect pop tunes that really work their magic because of their honesty contained within the lyrics.

In fact, lead singer Brent Shirley said to John Sinkevics of Local Spins that “Stray Animals” is “about the choices people make in life, the consequences of those decisions and humanizing, or rather, re-humanizing ourselves.”

If you have not seen the band or simply are curious to hear more from Valentiger, then check them out at one of the last shows supporting “Stray Animals” and before they head back to the studio to record their new release.

Opening for Valentiger are Woven Tangles (Detroit) and Ladders (Milwaukee)
