New tool being used at Saint Mary's to improve Parkinson's diagnosis

Saint Mary's Health Care will be one of three Midwestern facilities selected to administer a new diagnostic test that helps to distinguish Parkinson's disease from other non-Parkinson disorders.

According to Dr. Leslie Neuman, a neurologist specializing in Parkinson's, says the new tool, DaTscan, is the "first test to identify Parkinson's from other conditions. It is a step forward in the diagnosis, but not the last step," he says.

Neuman indicates that not only will the diagnosis help the patient and  their families, but will also be very beneficial in "research protocols" as health care providers try to reduce misdiagnosis from similar diseases.

Although DaTscan is new to this country, it has been used extensively in Europe with over 300,000 tests completed.
