Detroit has shared many of its local jewels with the rest of the region over the years, such as Faygo and Vernors. Now West Michigan is reciprocating with its own goodness, Hudsonville Ice Cream.

Creamy, cold Hudsonville Ice Cream became less of a West Michigan secret this summer.

Bruce Kratt, vice president for sales and marketing at the Holland-based creamery and ice cream company, said this week that the brand gained serious attention in Detroit over the summer and was successfully introduced into the Chicago area.

The company doubled its share of the ice cream retail market in Detroit to 8 percent, Kratt said. "That's an indication that the Detroit consumer has picked us as their preferred local brand," he said.
