Inaugural Meijer State Games start next weekend in Grand Rapids

According to The Grand Rapids Press, the inaugural Meijer State Games of Michigan that starts Friday is expected to attract 3,500 athletes from across the state for the Olympic-style sporting competition. The weekend event includes competition in basketball, racquetball and bowling at more than two dozen West Michigan venues.

According to excerpts from the story:

All those athletes and their families will pump money into the West Michigan economy, from filling beds at hotels to tables at restaurants. The economic impact is expected to be more than $700,000 in direct spending. Each athlete usually translates to $125 in hotel, meals, attractions and shopping per day, said Mike Guswiler, executive director of the West Michigan Sports Commission.
