Grand Rapids' historic Morton House Hotel slated for renovation

The Grand Rapids Press reports that new owners of Grand Rapids' historic Morton House Hotel have plans to transform the massive structure.

According to excerpts from the story:

The DeVos family is expected to join a partnership led by Rockford Construction to buy the recently vacated Morton House, giving the family at least a partial interest in all three of the largest historic hotels downtown.

The last of 214 tenants at the Morton House, which decades ago had been adapted for use as Section 8 housing for low-income residents, moved out Aug. 31.

In May Bingham Farms-based Saperstein Associates announced plans to sell the Morton House after its 40-year contract with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development expired.

The hulking building, 55 Ionia Ave. NW, is 91 years old and once rivaled the Pantlind (now part of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel) as the city's plushest hotel for business travelers.
