Grand Rapids, Kent Trails, Ada among recipients of fed stimulus millions for transportation projects

Millions of dollars of federal stimulus funding will jumpstart transportation projects in West Michigan, including bike/pedestrian trails, bridges and streets. State leaders expect the funding to create jobs across the region.

Dirt is already being moved, but Sparta Village Manager Sharon DeLange said she was more than happy to welcome Lt. Gov. John Cherry when he visited Kent County Thursday to announce $376,500 worth of federal money will help fix up her downtown streets. "We're thrilled he's doing a formal presentation," said DeLange. Like a political Easter Bunny, Cherry visited Flint, Detroit, Jackson and Grand Rapids Thursday to announce 22 transportation "enhancement" projects that will be funded through the federal government's economic stimulus programs. Four of the projects are in Kent County while a fifth project will go towards street enhancements in the Allegan County community of Wayland.
