GR's Children's Hospital approved at local level; State approval next step

A trend toward closing pediatric departments in smaller West Michigan hospitals is expected to send more young patients from a 13-county area to the proposed $250 million Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. That fact figured into the considerations of the Evaluation Board of the Alliance for Health when they voted to approve the new facility.

Spectrum Health’s proposal to build a new children’s hospital moves to the state Department of Community Health after receiving a positive recommendation at the local level Thursday.

The Evaluation Board of the Alliance for Health, which reviews health care projects in 12 West Michigan counties, gave the children’s hospital the thumbs-up Thursday.

Connors also said $93 million has been raised in the community to cover part of the tab.
