Work starts to rebuild Little Mexico Café

Little Mexico Cafe owners Enrique and Consuelo Ayala have started to rebuild the landmark cafe in the Stockbridge neighborhood almost six months after a fire destroyed the original restaurant.

According to excerpts from the story:

Almost six months after a fire destroyed Little Mexico Cafe, a restaurant owned by Enrique Ayala and his wife, Consuelo, crews were working to rebuild the popular West Side Mexican restaurant, 401 Stocking Ave. NW.

Ayala hopes to be ready to reopen in August.

Speaking through an interpreter, family friend Rosa Dull, Ayala said he looks forward to seeing his customers and employees back to work in what is expected to be a larger, more vibrant restaurant.

The couple bought the restaurant in 1997.

"They are excited to see all of the customers who used to come here," Dull said. "There were a lot of calls saying they wanted them to come back. They want to invest in the neighborhood.

"They're happy. They really like it here.
