According to WOOD-TV, three public swimming pools plan to open in Grand Rapids July 5 for seven weeks, thanks to private donations. Businessman Bob Sullivan pledged to fund operations at Richmond Pool on the city's Northwest Side, while a whirlwind grassroots campaign by the Friends of Grand Rapids Parks raised more than $177,000 to ensure the opening of Briggs Pool on the city's Northeast Side and Martin Luther King Jr. Pool on the city's Southeast Side.

"What we did here was really put together a campaign that brought both the grassroots and the grass tops together," said Steve Faber, the director of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks. "And I think that's symbolic of Grand Rapids. It's how we work as a community -- how we come together."
