Group targets West Michigan coast for state’s 13th underwater preserve

Great Lakes shipwrecks along the West Michigan coast could soon be part of a protected underwater preserve. If approved, the action could spur tourism by attracting diving and shipwreck enthusiasts.

According to excerpts from the story:

WEST MICHIGAN -- A formal application that could make the West Michigan coast the 13th underwater preserve in Michigan is nearing completion after a year of legwork and a serious illness for one of the local organizers that delayed the process.

Local residents who are spearheading the West Michigan Underwater Preserve proposal are set to meet this month to review the application details. The seven-member board expects the application to be sent in the next two months to the state's Underwater Salvage and Preserve Committee, which considers such applications.

Supporters say the proposed preserve would help save area shipwrecks, provide education on local maritime history and increase tourism among divers and shipwreck enthusiasts.
