Spring Lake seeks $800K in state funds for bike paths, wetland observation decks

Greenways and spaces for outdoor recreation continue to figure prominently as drawing cards for young talent. Spring Lake’s easy accessibility to Lake Michigan and new plans to develop more trails could enhance the lakeshore’s attraction to young professionals.

SPRING LAKE — The village recreational landscape likely will look a lot different in coming years.

A new bike path along the Grand River, Central Park renovations and other public amenities — including a dog park, skate park, and cross-country ski and mountain bike trails — are all part of the plan. The recently approved five-year community recreation plan is a prerequisite for grant funding, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton.

"The village (financial) portion will be as little as possible when we get through with the (state) grants," Cotton said, estimating that the $800,000 Grand River Greenway first-phase bike path will cost the village about $75,000 if anticipated grants come through.
