Cabildo at the Park: Rolling at twilight

Saturday, August 1, 8 p.m.
Everyone loves the insider edge, and this weekend the best crest to ride if you are not at the beach or tied to a house project is to get to a really fun party.

Drawing their name from the Spanish word for "Town Hall", a cabildo's history in this country was often where slaves were allowed to play the music of their culture. Borrowing from its humble history, the band has flourished locally to become one of the city's most anticipated Latin folk-dance collectives.

Members of Cabildo have come and gone but their commitment to a diverse offering of rock, folk, cumbia, ska, and other music genres married to a lyrical roots of standards, covers, and original songs has made them one of the most important cultural "living" monuments in Grand Rapids. Seriously, we need a historic preservation status for their sound in our city!

One would be hard pressed to think of a better setting for creating such a new experience than listening to Cabildo as skateboarders (young and old) zip around at a skate park on the NE side of the city. And if you were one of the many who were at the recent #LoveWins at the Rainbow Bridge downtown pop-party, then you can affirm that this event that also begins near sunset is truly what Local Spins' John Sinkevics was talking about when he wrote, "Summertime is Cabildo-time."

So pack your deck and head to Camp H Skate Park for an exciting night of music.

Admission: $7.
