Modul8: The hidden gems of techno's underground

There seems to be no shortage of folks who claim an ignorance of what is electronic dance music (EDM) in this market, but luckily we are seeing on many levels an effort of a few promoters to change that fact.

One artist who has single-handedly owned Monday nights for more than five years is DJ SuperDre, who created a music night at Billy’s Lounge in Eastown titled Bassbin. Since its debut, Dre’s programming of this weekly series has been spot-on and has educated our market on the diversity of EDM beats and styles.

DJ SuperDre may have departed Grand Rapids a few years ago to advance her professional career in Los Angeles before landing a sweetheart of a deal in Detroit (her new home), but her love for Grand Rapids just keeps popping up with events like her Modul8 appearance.

Modul8 is a fitting program for SuperDre to appear since it, too, is following the popular DJ’s model BassBin created as the event planners seek to further educate the curious while hosting a DJ rich experience of artfully created beats.

“It’ll be great to see my Grand Rapids friends as I’m looking forward to a great night of electronic music,” says SuperDre, “Matthew (Sylock), Nenad (Nesto) and I have all known each other for a long time. It’ll be great to throw down with them again.”

How this event differs than from the past is that this time around we are going to pulling a speakeasy-like move, as this event’s producers will not reveal its location until the evening of the dance party.

This is a nice touch since it harkens back to a time in our city’s history when you had to know someone in order to gain access to the many hidden parties that would, and continue to, pop up in our region.

These types of event like Modul8 are critical building blocks of our counter-culture, as they breathe life into the art form of hosting an event. The rawness of this event is because of its ability and desire to shake things up — something the arts have needed for a long time, in my opinion.

Modul8 not only will welcome SuperDre back to the stage for a special night of deep house and Detroit-style techno, but will be joined by Nešto B2B H-Bomb and Sylock, who are opening for the former Grand Rapidian.
