Grand Rapids’ Flat Iron Building to host upcoming ActiveSite college art showcase

The marriage of art, artists and development in downtown Grand Rapids continues this month in three historic, and yet-to-be-renovated, buildings. The buildings, in their raw, undeveloped state will be non-traditional galleries for student and faculty art.

According to excerpts from the story:

Although ActiveSite has held four previous events, partners Todd Ernst, Paul Amenta and Eric Kuhn are still looking for ways to grow and improve.

"I guess ActiveSite's just always going to be in flux -- that's the nature of what we do," Ernst said. "A lot of that is in part due to the building we take on."

ActiveSite is an exhibition for student artists in the area, held in buildings undergoing rehabilitation. It began in 2007 with students from one college, and Ernst expects eight institutions to participate in the fifth event next month. ActiveSite | Emerge will be held April 17 at the Flat Iron Building in Grand Rapids.

The building does present unique challenges for the event, but Ernst said owner Locus Development -- along with Orion Construction, general contractor on the project -- has taken anything but a spectator's role.
