You're a local college student, roaming the city with your trusty laptop and an eye on the neighborhood happenings. You want an inside peek at a weekly publication, including media events, editorial meetings, interviews, and the nitty-gritty daily details. We're a local publication, covering West Michigan with an ear to the ground for the stories of growth, talent and innovation. We're hoping for a smart, hardworking writer to join our team and help us find even more local goodness to cover this spring. Together, we'll use our superpowers to tell the stories that need telling in our city.
 
Title: Journalism Intern, Rapid Growth Media
Reports to: Stephanie Doublestein, managing editor
Hours: 5-10 hours per week
Term: January – May 2014, start and end dates negotiable
Pay: unpaid, for college credit only

Rapid Growth Media is seeking a Journalism Intern for the spring 2014 semester. The intern will assist with multiple aspects of writing and publishing a weekly online magazine and will gain experience in interview skills, research, writing, editing, and promotion of content.
 
Responsibilities:
 
·      Attend press conferences and community events to gather information
·      Shadow project editors to learn interview and fact-checking skills in a variety of coverage areas, potentially including development news, innovation and jobs, nonprofit news, social innovation, and events
·      Assist in discovering community organizations and events worthy of news coverage, and pitch to an editor
·      Write several short development and/or innovation and jobs articles, one Do Good feature, and one full-length feature article over the course of the semester
·      Assist with social media promotion of the Rapid Growth Media website
·      Attend one editorial advisory meeting per semester
·      Assist with and attend one Speaker Series event per semester
 
Requirements:
 
·      Declared major or minor in English, writing, communications, or journalism
·      Excellent written and verbal communication skills
·      Ability to collaborate with others
·      Ability to create original copy and meet deadlines
·      Desire to connect with a diverse set of community leaders and organizations
·      Proficiency in word processing software, Facebook and Twitter
