Everything is Free
If you believe you can’t get something for nothing, you’ve never been to the Freedom Celebration.
Typically, people hold a garage sale to clean out the attic, get rid of old junk, and make a few extra dollars. Not organizers of the Freedom Celebration. These people sponsor a garage sale every Fourth of July to tackle the heavy issues of oppression, injustice, and poverty. So everything, get this, is free.
“Every year on the 4th of July we have a big garage-sale type give away,” the Grand Rapids-based members of the Freedom Collective write on their blog. “Everything is FREE! Many families participate and we always have a good time.”
“Come out, participate, get stuff, eat, and enjoy,” they add.
Organizers already are receiving drop offs at 733 Lake Drive, the same place as the, ummm, sale. But they have one rule: No broken junk. Just leave your items on the porch if noone is home. They’re also looking for volunteers to prepare food, help shoppers, draw chalk sketches on the sidewalk, or whatever.
Contact event organizers for more information. They include Amy and Mike VanZoeren at (616) 458-7698 or amyvzee@gmail.com. And Jennifer and Rich Holshoe at (616) 301-3757 or jenniferholshoe@yahoo.com.
