Our city’s wildly popular but non-degree seeking art school of Grand Rapids, Dr. Sketchy’s, is taking a bit of a fun holiday break from the norm and offering a very special night at The Rezervoir Lounge in the heart of Creston.
Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School this month will once again feature your fabulous hosts, Miss Vivacious Miss Audacious and Sarah Jean Anderson, and will welcome a very special model who has been turning heads ever since she debuted in the basement at (the now closed) Diversions.
Drag queen Siren, who recently competed in Grand Rapids Drag Race, may have placed third, but she has been top billing in many circles as her designs are pushing the boundaries of what drag can deliver locally.
Be sure to bring your supplies, and be prepared to sketch some of the most bizarre and inspired outfits you have seen in a long time.
Immediately after art school has wrapped be sure to stay for Shimmy Shack Burlesque, who will take another wild turn inviting Siren, Vaz DeFranzia, and a very special surprise guest as they perform in Haute Holidays: Drag Revue — a faux-queen burlesque and sideshow hosted by Vivacious Miss Audacious and Ms. Anderson.
Siren is the main attraction this night and gravitates toward the avant-garde, often experimenting with creative looks and making even the outfits she might have borrowed truly her own after her performances. A GVSU film school graduate, Siren enjoys cerebral films, action adventure video games, and harassing robots posing as humans on Grindr with wit.
The organizers promise that this is more than just a drag show and that if you are worried about missing the big “other” drag show happening downtown at Rumors, Miss Audacious reminds me that the Haute’s programming will be wrapped up in plenty of time for others to attend both performances.
Haute Holidays will be more than a drag show, with Siren’s brand of drag as performance art visits popular Christmas tales, with all the holiday favorites as trimmings. Who knows, if you are lucky enough to visit The Rez, maybe a visit from Krampus will appear as well.
