You have to admit, even if you do not like comedy, that there is something devilishly fresh about Calvin College inviting the legendary comedy troupe The Second City to the Covenant Fine Arts Center’s stage.
When you add to the mix that this is the same Chicago-based improvisational comedy troupe responsible for launching the careers of hundreds of stars like Tina Fey, Jim Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Amy Poehler, and even Joan Rivers, then you know right away this is going to be a wild card night of numerous, thigh-slapping, nose-snorting “I cannot believe they just said that” moments.
The Second City is renown for its satire of our contemporary culture, which means that this group is well-read on the issues of today. The show’s fresh-on-the-spot works of comic genius are presented in a rapid-fire format via sketches and songs but also through audience-contributed vignettes of their creating.
With all that is happening in our world today, even if this comedy troupe dives to the bottom of the barrel to scrape up comic material, you can be certain it will produce many awkward moments of laughter. In my opinion, this is when comedy gets it right.
Also appearing on this night of fresh comedy will be the Calvin Improv - our clean comedy improv troupe.
