A fashion trend that recently has become popular in west Michigan has had positive benefits for an unlikely industry.

The trendy look of feathers entwined in peoples' hair isn't just boosting business at hair salons. It's generating sales at shops that sell fly fishing gear.

Rooster feathers used for fishing lures can do double duty as the stylish hair accessories.

That's why Shag Trenton is seeing hair stylists in his bait shop, Shag's TBN Outfitters at 736 Bridge St. NW, looking through his supply of colorful feathers.

He's been cleaned out of the "saddle hackles," slender 12- to 24-inch and longer feathers that grow on the back, or saddle, of specially-bred roosters. They are favored by fly tiers who want to produce four or more dry flies of the same size and pattern.
