Sunday liquor sales a go in Ottawa County

Ottawa County establishments will at long last be able to sell alcohol on Sundays after the community overwhelmingly overturned a long standing ban making the Lakeshore community a dry county.

HOLLAND, Mich. - Residents of one western Michigan county have voted to end a decades-old ban on Sunday beer and wine sales, despite concerns about wording of the ballot issue.

Opponents of the ban objected to ballot wording requiring a "no" vote to legalize Sunday beer and wine sales in Ottawa County.

The proposal said, "shall the sale of beer and wine ... between the hours of 2 a.m. and midnight on Sunday be prohibited?"

The "no" vote Tuesday was 90,500 to 43,722, or 67 percent in favor of letting stores and restaurants sell beer and wine.
