Carpe Diem Volleyball has leased court space from schools and churches for the past four years. Now they’re taking the step to make the southeast corner of the building at 1010 Front NW their athletic headquarters.
“We’re outgrowing everything, and churches and schools have their own schedules that we have to work around,” said David VanderMeer, president of the recently formed non-profit organization. “It was time for us to be able to run leagues on a more consistent basis.”
Teams must register and pay a team fee to get on a league schedule. The seasons run for six-week and eight-week periods. Carpe Diem currently has two women’s leagues and a co-ed league. They also run clinics for students 4th grade through high school, and offer one-on-one volleyball training for adults.
VanderMeer holds USAV Beach National Certification, Indoor Junior National Certification, and Indoor National Certification. He travels with the Association of Volleyball Professionals and officiates for college matches.
Michelle VanderMeer, David’s wife and the organization’s VP, has 17 years of experience coaching high school age players and teams.
Two courts handle all the action right now, and the league plans to put in a third court soon. Six courts is the VanderMeers’ goal, along with adding spectator seating and possibly locker rooms.
“My wife and I are doing this on our own, and as the organization grows and with our small board, we’ve only done what we can so far,” said David, who met Michelle playing beach volleyball. “Now we’re at a location where we can expand the league. We feel it’s the best location around and we can grow into it and have things get better.”
The public is welcome to join a league, stop by to cheer on a team, or rent the facility for volleyball matches, basketball, or dodge ball.
