$190 million children’s hospital continues Health Hill build out

Groundbreaking for the new Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is set for fall 2006. The 21-story, 414,000 square foot building will provide highly specialized services for pediatric patients, including surgery, emergency care, and laboratories. The facility, which is projected to cost $190 million to build and furnish, will replace an outdated parking ramp at the corner of Bostwick and Michigan Avenue.

The new children’s hospital joins construction of the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Center and an expansion of the Van Andel Institute as the latest projects taking shape on Health Hill. The so-called life sciences corridor along Michigan Avenue is part of a strategic plan to promote scientific advancements in biotechnology, lure innovative companies, and transform Grand Rapids’ economy for the 21st century.

The state-of-the-art facilitiy will position the DeVos Children’s Hospital to become one of the nation’s most advanced pediatric care centers. Already west Michigan’s largest children’s care center, the Helen DeVos Hospital serves children and families throughout a 37-county region. The pediatric team includes more than 100 specialists uniquely skilled in providing medical care to children.

Jonathan Bailey Design, an international architectural firm, and the New York City-based Rockwell Group have been selected to design the facility. The project is scheduled for completion in 2010.
