Restoration transforms apartment house in historic Hill district

In 1910, the first brick and stucco building of the historic Bachelder Apartments was constructed at 516 Lyon NE. Nine years later, a second building was built right next door. Sometime later, a third building was built in-between, connecting the buildings into a distinctive "U."

Developer Keith Cannon of Cannon & Co. has renamed the buildings Eldorado Condominiums, and is in the midst of transforming them and their outdated apartments into 13 market rate condominiums.

"We’re keeping all the original architectural elements," Cannon said. "There were porches that were torn off and the porches have all been rebuilt of cedar. The original wood floors were all refinished, the windows are all new with double-hung wood frames to comply with historic preservation requirements."

Cannon said he was particularly careful to preserve the octagon cut-tile flooring, which is original to the building. The addition of modern kitchens, lighting, and HVAC systems bring the condos into the 21st century.

Each first floor unit has a private patio opening onto an inner courtyard, and screened porches. A balcony off the kitchen and a sunroom are features in each second floor unit. Stainless steel appliances, concrete countertops, and a washer and dryer are standard amenities.

Prices for the one-, two-, and three-bedroom condos start at $129,900 and cap off around $349,900.
