Grand Haven outfitters Earth's Edge recently announced plans to move to a new retail space at Grand Landing. The store has operated from its 222 Washington Street location for 13 years, but the move will allow the shop to acquire 26 percent more square footage, bringing it to some 8,500 square feet.
"Besides more square footage, we'll have exposure to a much larger traffic flow, in excess of 68,000 cars per day," says owner Karl Tucker. "We do a large kayak and canoe business and this gives us access to the water from our shop."
The new store will have 15-foot ceilings, and Tucker plans to hang canoes and kayaks from the beams. Customers will learn how to attach car top carriers and kayak and bike racks to their vehicles with the help of the in-store Volkswagen bus. The new store will feature new product lines and a greater variety of merchandise from current suppliers.
"Some manufacturers are going to come in and set up concept shops," Tucker adds. "They come in with all the latest and greatest, and set up hands-on displays."
This spring, Tucker will also open a boathouse at the Grand Landing boardwalk. The boathouse will put kayak and canoe sales and rentals right on the Grand River, where adventurers can easily explore the waters leading to Spring Lake and Lake Michigan.
Construction on the main store began two weeks ago. The shop will open October 1.
