Salon Maui’s 685 square feet is bursting with character—from its totally candlelit shampoo room to its chocolate brown ceiling to its cozy location in the historic Oakwood Manor. The space was set aside decades ago as a hair salon for the manor's residents, but has sat vacant for eight years until it was resurrected last October by owner Ryan Kewaygoshkum.
“Ryan asked people where they went to relax, and many of them said Maui,” says salon manager Warren Anderson. “He wanted the salon to be a place where people come to relax and unwind, so that’s why he named it Salon Maui.”
Kewaygoshkum, 32 — a veteran hair stylist, colorist and instructor whose professional training ground includes Toni & Guy, L’Oreal Professionell, and Redken — wasn’t in the market to open his own salon. But he promised a realtor friend he’d look at the space and, even though the place was painted lime green and purple, he “had a vision of what it could be.”
The salon offers services for men, women, and children, including cuts, styles, color, facial hair waxing, perms and strand-by-strand and double-tape hair extensions.
“Ryan is the only stylist in the downtown area that does extensions,” says Anderson.
Julie Momber, 21, is the salon’s other stylist. Prices vary between stylists, with cuts starting at $25 and color starting at $40.
“Our biggest complaint from clients,” Anderson says, “is that they don’t want to leave.”
Salon hours are Tuesday – Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 10 to 5, and first and third Saturdays 10 to 2.
