Heartside gallery brings raw edge to GR art scene

By: Deborah Johnson Wood

The windowless black walls and industrial ceiling of a new gallery at 15 Ionia SW say it all: NOIR. The gallery, created by Bar Divani owners Dennis Moosbrugger and Rimple Nayyar, will celebrate its Grand Opening on April 6, from 6 to 9 PM, during the Spring for the Arts: Studio Hop!

"When you walk in, the artwork just 'pops' against the black background," said JynnaVyve Bruntmeyer, curator and gallery manager. " Immediately the art overtakes you; it's refreshing and surprising at the same time. The atmosphere is extremely intimate. It forces you to get close to the art and form a relationship with it."

Bruntmeyer has been busy lining up a collection of regional artists who, she says, "stretch the definition of art" through the creation of raw, experimental styles, mediums, and messages. The focus is on unusual contemporary art pieces that may include sculpture, paintings, and fiber art. The gallery's technical features enable video artists to showcase their animation, slides, and DVD creations.

The exhibit space includes 1,000 square feet of floor space and 500 square feet of wall display space. Moosbrugger says the investment, so far, nears $35,000.

The sculpture and furniture of local artist Aaron Reimers will be the featured work during the grand opening.

Daily hours are by appointment by calling 616.856.0366, and include a personal tour of the gallery and information on the artwork and the artist.
