Last month, Riverview Market, an open-air market in downtown Whitehall with upwards of 24 vendors, flung open its "doors" and invited shoppers to stroll its aisles. The idea for the market came about last year as part of Whitehall's Cool Cities Blueprint plan.
"Our hope is to have it be a way for people to gather, to come downtown and shop at the stores as well," says Karen Helmlinger, city clerk/planner.
The market, situated in the North Mears parking lot, is open Saturdays from 8 AM to noon and features offerings from residents and local shops, alike. Each week's treasure trove of goods is always different, ranging from tools and antique furniture to specialty T-shirts, Avon products, and jewelry.
"We've even had people who couldn't have a yard sale at their home so they came down and had it at the market," says Helmlinger. "We want anybody to have an opportunity to sell if they want to. We will not turn anyone away."
The market is one of the few that is accessible by car, foot, bike, and, yes, even boat. It's within walking distance of the city marina, Goodrich Park, and if one takes the White Lake Pathway, it's just a short walk or bike ride to the nearby city of Montague.
Riverview Market runs through Labor Day. A 10-foot by 20-foot space rents for $5. Vendors provide their own tables and canopies. To reserve a space, interested persons should contact the City of Whitehall.
