$78 million cancer center rising on Health Hill

Eight months after breaking ground for the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion, construction workers have dug two of the biggest holes in the ground that Grand Rapids residents have ever seen. They have also begun tunneling under Michigan Avenue toward Spectrum hospital and pouring the foundation of what will become the regional hub for cancer care.

Rising on the former Burger King site at the corner of Coit and Michigan, the new 200,000 square foot facility will allow Spectrum Health to consolidate and expand the majority of cancer-related services and staff, including physician offices, research labs, chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and other services. The facility also enables Spectrum Health to intensify its research relationship with the Van Andel Institute, located across the street.

The new cancer center, which will feature a multi-story ‘healing garden’ filled with live plants, is projected to cost $78 million. It is named after Harvey Lemmen and Earl Holton, two longtime employees of Meijer known for their community service efforts. The purchase of the property was made possible by a gift from Fred Meijer, the company’s founder, and his wife Lena in 2002. The cancer center is scheduled to open in fall 2007.
