Scheduled to open in spring 2008, St. Mary’s planned Hauenstein Neurosciences Center is expected to keep the local hospital on the leading edge in the fight to understand and cure such disorders as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, brain tumors, and dementia.
The planned $60 million Hauenstein Center will house all of the hospital’s neurological services, as well as an expanded emergency care center. At 140,000 square feet, the center is projected to be the largest of its kind in the Midwest, elevating Grand Rapids’ stature as a center of innovative medical research.
The need for new services, skills, and technologies to care for patients afflicted with brain and nervous system disorders is expected to grow as the population ages. By 2007, neurosurgeons at St. Mary’s expect to see some 30,000 office visits from patients across Michigan.
The new center will be located at 200 Jefferson. The project also includes a 425 space parking structure to serve the entire hospital.
