$17 million Heartside project to expand art studio and affordable housing

The start of August has been tentatively set as the groundbreaking date for renovation and additions to the Dwelling Place Inn. The $17 million redevelopment in the Heartside district will add two arts-related live/work spaces and expand the floor space for Studio 71—one of several arts studios that line the city’s bustling Avenue for the Arts.

The inn, which runs north on Division Avenue to Weston Avenue, consists of three aging buildings that house 88 subsidized units for low-income residents. During renovation, the units will be enlarged and combined to make 44. A new five-story addition, to be completed first, will feature 72 studios and two floors of parking.

Besides adding 28 new housing units, the project will also renovate and add commercial space to the district. The inn’s operational offices will vacate their existing space and move into the new addition, leaving two ground floor commercial spaces. Another commercial space will open up on Division Avenue next to existing tenant Kelly Sweet Photography. Studio 71 will expand its operations into the newly renovated space at 10 Weston. And the Heartside Ministry will continue to lease 2 spaces—one for its art gallery and one for its main offices.

The inn will change names to the Verne Barry Place once completed in July 2007.
