G-Sync Events for the weeks of 6/19– 25/2009
A few weeks ago I presented the idea on my Facebook to my friends in Detroit that we need to begin a cultural exchange program between our cities as a way to strengthen our individual cities economics.
In a joking fashion, I mentioned the concept of a city ambassadorship and was surprised at the number of responses I received from people who were totally into this notion. I am not sure how it would work, but it is nice to know that together, two shiny cities in Michigan could potentially find a way to make the down times a bit more lighter.
As emissaries for metro Grand Rapids, we should be prepared to share all those great, unfamiliar gems in our area such as Founders Brewing Co.'s Founders Fest - a street party that celebrates our number one beer ambassador to the world. For those who have never heard of Founders Brewing, it's rated as the 7th top brewery on the planet by RateBeer.com. So if we start an ambassadorship program, I will definitely nominate Founders as our official beer.
Musically, we will be plenty busy with our ambassadorship program -- there are so many groups and musicians to share with Detroit. Somewhere on this elite list is singer/songwriter Ralston Bowles, who was in the hospital battling cancer when the application deadline passed to appear on the billing of the Rothbury Festival. Local fans have mounted a write-in campaign with the Rothbury producers to secure Ralston a performance slot at the festival. With that kind of ground support, organizers should take notice.
So maybe the ambassadorship program has already unofficially and organically launched. If you happen to have an event that highlights our city's best, be sure to let me know who and what you think should be on our must-see, gotta-try list.
Choose local.…and often.
