G-Sync Events for the weeks of 08/07 – 8/13/2009
By Tommy Allen
For those who feed themselves a steady diet of 24/7 cable news programming, it can be easy to know about happenings in a far corner of the globe, yet miss the community right in front of them. Let me try to explain.
I am not saying TV is bad, but if all you and I did was to watch TV news, then we could become wound up about world events in which we cannot affect the outcome, yet we would do little to contribute to our community where we can have a great deal of impact.
I have an (unscientific) theory that by watching the world’s problems unfold in near real time, it is easy to develop a case of “what can I do” syndrome that more times than not results with nothing getting done.
This week’s G-Sync seeks to highlight the eclectic diversity of our community, but also to indirectly celebrate those individuals in our community who come together to create events where making a connection is possible. Whether the connection is produced by the hard labor of the committees or a hefty check from one of the many generous companies that have made metro Grand Rapids their hometown, individuals have taken the initiative to be involved to make the local magic happen.
But even with our effort and cash, not all events will run smoothly. Far from it when you read my thoughts on a few events in this week’s G-Sync. However, what all of these events share is a “we can do” reboot for those suffering from news overload.
Choose local.…and often.
