G-Sync – Getting the Treatment

To everyone who uses Andy Warhol's quote: "In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes," here is my standard reply,
"I don't want to belong to any club that will accept people like me as a member," a great line dropped by Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx.

Folks over at the Dog Story Theatre get the fact that fame is fleeting, and anyone who takes it seriously is setting himself or herself up for a pratfall. So the theater has been essentially roasting local celebrities with a comedy series called The VIP Comedy Show these past few Mondays.

The troupe is made up of a revolving door of cast members from local groups like Pop Scholars, Mental Lipstick, Fishladder, River City Improv, Calvin Improv and The Don't We Boys, who use a very simple "getting to know you, getting to know everything about you" format to unearth some embarassing nuggets that we all have in our lives.

Part of the charm of attending this strict one hour show is the chance to hear the oral history from the "local celebrity," but then have that history upended in a hilarious "This Is Your Life" rapid fire, laugh out loud performance.

To date people such as FOX17's Emily Richett, Grand Rapids Social Diary's Laura Caprara and even Mars Hill's Rob Bell have all had their life stories retold, and it seems that no topic is off limits.

And no one is off limits. It's going to be my turn on the stage this upcoming Monday, May 17 to have some of the air let out of my ego.

Imagine having everyone in your family -- the wisecracking brother, the snarky sister, the smart-ass uncle -- having a free-for-all at your expense, with an audience to watch no less. Sounds like fun -- for everyone else.

But I have a secret that is helping me get through running this gauntlet. After next week, I may have a chance to give the troupe input as to the next poor sap who they should turn on the spit.

Shhh, don't tell a soul, and welcome to the club.

The Future Needs All of Us (to laugh at ourselves more.)
