Michigan Labs develops custom apps for 'the rest of us'

Grand Rapids-based Michigan Labs was founded in 2010 by Josh Hulst and Mark Johnson. Although their firm works within a wide a variety of industries, their primary goal when starting Michigan Labs was to develop "apps for the rest of us."

Johnson explains that 'big business' has the resources to take advantage of the booming market for mobile apps, but, "Michigan Labs was founded as a way to develop apps 'for the of us.' We wanted to service nonprofits, smaller businesses, and entrepreneurs. There are now more mobile devices than people, but there are not enough people offering development services."

The firm can make apps for the iPhone, Android, and tablets. Currently, Johnson and Hulst work with a team of contractors, designers, and developers, but have plans to add 5-10 developers with a focus on mobile strategy and user interface (UI) in the next couple of years.

Johnson says their firm has the expertise and experience to work with clients through the entire process of bringing an app to market. "We can the manage the process from the back of the napkin to a whiteboard, and (then) to the App Store."
