Bet you didn’t know your Big Mac did that

Spare change. We all have it, rolling around at the bottom of a purse, in a storage container for a rainy day, in pockets while doing the laundry. But who would have thought collection boxes at a fast-food restaurant chain could amount to $600,000 annually throughout West Michigan? Well, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Outstate Michigan did.

Over $600,000 was raised by people in our community placing their loose change from buying a Big Mac or other McDonald's fare into a collection box, located either at the register or drive-thru. It's the charity's largest fundraiser and with those pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, they support our local programs that focus on the social, physical and/or emotional wellbeing of our children. They give it all back to the local community.

Of course, they support the local Ronald McDonald House that operates in northeast Grand Rapids, but they also provide scholarships to students and bestow grants to many nonprofits with programs that are assisting children such as Kids' Food Basket, Kent County Girls on the Run and Indian Trails Camp.

Even the smallest of donations can make a huge impact. Our small change could be transformational for one of our local charities and make a huge difference in the life of a child.
