Training for young urban leaders receives an enormous boost

Grand Rapids Initiative for Leaders (GRIL), a nonprofit organization that teaches vital leadership skills to urban teenagers in disadvantaged West Michigan communities, received a $225,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to expand services and outreach.

GRIL’s goal is to develop leaders by nurturing their personal, ministry and organizational growth so they are sustained and living out their core values. The organization provides a 9-month training program to empower budding leaders to build a strong foundation to guide their actions as they go out into the world and plan their future. Ultimately, GRIL transforms communities.

“We are thrilled and honored to have received this grant award from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation,” says Denise Fase, executive director of GRIL. “It will expand our community outreach, allow us to increase the number of youth we serve and make a greater impact in communities where our teens live and go to school.”

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation chose the GRIL program to receive support through a grant application process. The Foundation, established in 1930 by the cereal pioneer, supports children, families and communities as they strengthen and create conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve success as individuals and as contributors to the larger community and society.

Our community benefits through the program and the funding with more do-gooders being mentored and trained right here in Grand Rapids!
