Help Wanted: Must. Like. Beer.

Brewery Vivant, which opened  at the end of the year in 2010, went from founder Jason Spaulding  and three managers to almost 45 total employees by the end of 2011. With expansion planned in the spring, another 2-3 jobs are anticipated to be added.

"Liking beer" will certainly help in a job interview at Brewery Vivant, but it is only the first step in the process of working at the local microbrewery, according to Spaulding. Spaulding also adds that as long as someone has an interest and an open mind toward understanding craft beer, they can learn.

Spaulding outlines their training process as, "Everyone we hire has to go through our classes: Vivant 101, where they learn about why the brewery was started and why we chose to do it here; Beer 101, where they learn about our brewing process and what makes it different from most; Sustainability 101, where they learn about our efforts on environment, economics and helping our community. We look for people that get energized and want to help us in these efforts."

Vivant's commitment to sustainability was recently recognized when they became the first LEED certified microbrewery in the United States.

"Michigan beer is just coming into its own and actually starting to attract not just local business, but people from outside Michigan are talking about what we are doing. It is just an exciting time to be a brewer," concludes Spaulding.
