Kentwood Global Tech program a blueprint for proposed Kent Innovation High School

The Grand Rapids Press reports that a new technology program at East Kentwood High School challenges students to apply technology in real-world situations to solve social and business problems. The learning method is the blueprint for a new high school that targets technology and innovation learning.

According to excerpts from the story:

East Kentwood freshman Gabriella Mynda searched for a way to describe her school's Global Tech program, a departure from traditional high school learning.

"It's fun, but it's hard fun," she said, as classmates nodded in agreement. Kentwood's program is one of two in the region based on the New Tech Network's philosophy of project-based learning, where students use multiple subjects as they create presentations, often working to solve problems suggested by local businesses and organizations.

The programs are serving as a blueprint for the Kent Innovation High School, a countywide effort planned to open in the fall on the campus of the Kent Intermediate School District. Both Kentwood's Global Tech program and Holland's New Tech High are wrapping up their first year with enthusiastic support from students and educators. While they stress it's still early to measure the academic impact, administrators said scores on standardized tests for Global Tech students were higher than average.
